Role in the story
Fu Chengfeng is the principal male character paired with Rong Yi in the novel’s later-generation continuation. A talented swordsman with an important martial lineage, he is drawn into disputes involving Riyue Manor (日月山庄), political intrigue in Jinling and accusations concerning Yun Ni (云霓).
His importance extends beyond his romance. The final chapters examine whether an extraordinary swordsman will become ruled by violence or achieve mastery while maintaining his own judgement.
Edition context
The online continuation calls his partner Rong Yi (容忆), while a published-volume description calls her Murong Yi (慕容忆). The sources checked do not establish why these name forms differ.
02 - Names, forms of address and appearance
Character dossier - Part 02
Names, forms of address and appearance
A refined young martial hero with a formidable sword
Key details
| Chinese name | 傅乘风 |
|---|---|
| Standard English name | Fu Chengfeng |
| Given-name address | Chengfeng (乘风) |
| Martial relationship | Shidi (师弟), junior martial brother of Chu Changge |
| Respectful forms | Fu Gongzi (傅公子), Young Master Fu; Fu Shaoxia (傅少侠), Young Hero Fu |
| Future marital title | Fuma (驸马), imperial son-in-law, contingent on marriage |
| Appearance | Handsome, imposing; a cold bearing when angered |
| Weapon | Sword; Duantian Sword (断天剑) is identified in later chapters |
His bearing
Fu Chengfeng is portrayed as a handsome and accomplished swordsman who usually maintains a measured, composed demeanour. His appearance changes dramatically when he believes Rong Yi has been murdered: he arrives at Prince Kaoshan’s residence cold-faced and carrying a sword, his grief giving him an almost terrifying presence.
In that confrontation, his sword carves a deep line into the ground as he walks, demonstrating the force behind his apparently effortless movement.
The family-title problem
Rong Yi jokingly treats him as her future Fuma (驸马). If they marry, Chu Changge would be both Fu Chengfeng’s senior martial brother and his father-in-law. Fu Chengfeng’s confusion over the proper form of address becomes one of the novel’s final jokes.
03 - Personality, strengths and vulnerabilities
Character dossier - Part 03
Personality, strengths and vulnerabilities
A disciplined swordsman whose love tests his self-control
Key details
| Strengths | Courage, intelligence, swordsmanship, adaptability and loyalty |
|---|---|
| Usual manner | Reserved, witty and observant |
| When provoked | Can become cold, threatening and decisive |
| Greatest vulnerability | The belief that Rong Yi may be lost to him |
| Defining moral conflict | The Way of the Sword (剑道) versus the Demonic Path (魔道) |
Defining traits
- Courage (勇敢): confronts highly dangerous opponents even when weakened.
- Restraint (克制): generally avoids being ruled by impulse.
- Devotion (深情): his attachment to Rong Yi becomes deeply personal.
- Judgement (判断力): investigates hidden motives and techniques.
- Resourcefulness (随机应变): exploits short-lived openings during capture and combat.
- Dry humour (机智): eventually matches Rong Yi’s playful arguments.
The contradiction at his centre
Fu Chengfeng values skill and self-mastery, yet becomes dangerously close to self-destruction when he believes the woman he loves has died. His opponents attempt to use that grief to force a transformation into a weapon of vengeance.
The conclusion gives this struggle a martial meaning: he achieves great power without surrendering his will to the sword.
04 - Martial school and connections to the Chu family
Character dossier - Part 04
Martial school and connections to the Chu family
Shidi of Chu Changge, future son-in-law of the same man
Key details
| Senior martial brother | Chu Changge (楚长歌) |
|---|---|
| Another senior martial brother | Yu Tianli (俞天离) |
| Teacher’s identity | Not established in the checked chapters |
| Was he taught alongside Chu Changge? | No; Changge had already finished training before Fu joined |
| Future marital connection | Rong Yi is Chu Changge’s daughter |
| Broader family connection | Chu Murong (楚慕容), emperor, is Rong Yi’s elder brother |
Training chronology
Fu Chengfeng explains that Chu Changge had already completed his training by the time Fu joined their school. He therefore knows some of Changge’s younger exploits through stories rather than personal experience. Their standing as senior and junior martial brothers remains important regardless of when they trained.
Complicated household seniority
Traditional martial seniority would place Fu Chengfeng in the same generation as Rong Yi’s father. His proposed marriage places him in the next generation by kinship instead. He recognises the contradiction himself when considering how to address Chu Changge after the wedding.
05 - Sword, techniques and combat abilities
Character dossier - Part 05
Sword, techniques and combat abilities
Duantian Sword, Duanjian Tianya and devastating internal strength
Key details
| Primary weapon | Duantian Sword (断天剑), Heaven-Severing Sword |
|---|---|
| Sword technique | Duanjian Tianya (断剑天涯) |
| Sixth form | Tiandi Wusheng (天地无声), Heaven and Earth Fall Silent |
| Inner energy | Neili (内力) / Zhenqi (真气) |
| Other techniques | Acupoint sealing (点穴); Ge Shan Da Niu (隔山打牛) |
| Peak attainment | Ren Jian He Yi (人剑合一), Unity of Man and Sword |
A powerful swordsman
Fu Chengfeng uses extraordinary internal strength with precise swordsmanship. He also shows proficiency in mobility and acupoint-sealing methods. His technique can overcome numerous opponents, although using a form before mastering it may injure him severely.
Duanjian Tianya
The sixth form, Tiandi Wusheng (天地无声), can immobilise a group of enemies almost instantly by sealing their vital points. The price of using it prematurely is substantial: after escaping his captors, Fu suffers serious internal injuries and is left with less than a tenth of his strength.
The final technique
At Riyue Manor he reveals mastery of Ren Jian He Yi (人剑合一), not through the Demonic Path, but through the Way of the Sword. This becomes the decisive difference in his confrontation with Yun Hendong.
06 - Romance with Rong Yi / Murong Yi
Character dossier - Part 06
Romance with Rong Yi / Murong Yi
From concealed identities and teasing to genuine acceptance
Key details
| Partner | Rong Yi (容忆) / Murong Yi (慕容忆) |
|---|---|
| Her parents | Chu Changge and Murong Yunshu |
| Her imperial status | Princess Royal / Eldest Princess (长公主) |
| Their main difficulty | Belief that Fu prefers her earlier, apparently vulnerable self |
| Emotional resolution | Fu affirms he accepts her before and after her abilities are revealed |
| Marriage intention | Rong Yi plans a formal proposal and future life together |
An unconventional courtship
Rong Yi sets out to find the greatest husband under heaven and eventually meets Fu Chengfeng during her adventures around Riyue Manor. Unlike a passive romantic heroine, she frequently directs conversations and demands clear answers about his feelings.
Fu is initially embarrassed by her bluntness but increasingly engages in her teasing, creating a relationship reminiscent of Murong Yunshu and Chu Changge’s playful disagreements.
Accepting her true strength
After their reunion, Rong Yi pretends that she has lost her martial arts. When questioned, she admits that behaving like a defenceless woman allows her to resemble the person Fu knew earlier. She is worried that he dislikes her more powerful self.
Fu assures her that she has not changed in his eyes and that he loves her whether she seems weak or strong. The scene is central to their romance because his affection is not dependent on her hiding her identity or talent.
07 - Captivity and the sixth sword form
Character dossier - Part 07
Captivity and the sixth sword form
Escapes one trap but pays for the premature technique
Key details
| Captors | Qin Mu’an (秦慕安) and his cavalry |
|---|---|
| Capture setting | Journey towards Jinling |
| Escape technique | Duanjian Tianya, sixth form: Tiandi Wusheng |
| Injury | Internal energy damaged; combat strength sharply diminished |
| Pursuers | Xu Qingshan (徐青山), Tianshan Escort Agency (天山镖局) |
| Temporary arrangement | Uses Qin Mu’an to help deter pursuing enemies |
Reversing the situation
After Qin Mu’an’s men bind Fu Chengfeng and transport him on horseback, he waits until they stop and loosen his restraints. Fu then uses the sixth form of Duanjian Tianya to seal the points of the group almost instantly. He is free from immediate control but suffers severe backlash because the form has not yet been mastered.
An uneasy journey
Fu becomes too weak to escape pursuit comfortably. He continues travelling with the cavalry in the position of an apparent leader, even buying a valuable horse. When Xu Qingshan and the Tianshan Escort Agency approach, Fu releases Qin Mu’an to confront them, thereby preserving his own limited energy.
Why Rong Yi does not rush to save him
Rong Yi believes Fu remains capable of surviving. Chu Murong questions her confidence, but she insists that he does not yet face an immediate fatal threat. The difference between the danger she imagines and Fu’s actual injuries is part of the chapter’s humour.
08 - Rong Yi’s apparent death and their reunion
Character dossier - Part 08
Rong Yi’s apparent death and their reunion
His grief briefly overwhelms his restraint
Key details
| False report | Rong Yi and Chu Murong appear to die in a staged attack |
|---|---|
| Fu’s initial belief | Rong Yi has been killed |
| Location | Prince Kaoshan’s residence |
| Opponent he confronts | A man presented as Prince Kaoshan |
| Revelation | Rong Yi is alive and the apparent deaths were part of a scheme |
| Result | They reunite; his love and fear of losing her are made explicit |
An emotional breakdown
Believing Rong Yi dead, Fu Chengfeng enters the prince’s residence with a sword and a chilling determination to avenge her. He is so consumed by grief that he treats the possibility of his own death as inconsequential. His behaviour shows how profoundly he has come to depend on her presence.
The staged attack is uncovered
The supposed prince and the events surrounding him are elements in a political deception. Fu learns that the real prince’s position is different from what he had believed, and Rong Yi finally appears alive. The revelation abruptly transforms his rage into relief.
He embraces Rong Yi and demands that she never again play such a cruel trick. Their reunion provides the emotional basis for the more candid discussion of love that follows.
09 - Jinglong Zhi Ye and the Jinling conspiracy
Character dossier - Part 09
Jinglong Zhi Ye and the Jinling conspiracy
Qin Muzhi, Yun Nitian and the deception surrounding Prince Kaoshan
Key details
| Device | Jinglong Zhi Ye (惊龙之叶), which affects martial abilities |
|---|---|
| Key figures | Qin Mu’an / Qin Muzhi (秦慕安 / 秦慕之); Yun Nitian (云逆天) |
| Official involved | Prince Kaoshan (靠山王) |
| Ally | Shi Er Xiansheng (石二先生) |
| Countermeasure | A method to undo the device’s effect |
| Stratagem | The royal siblings stage their own deaths to expose the conspirators |
A hidden layer of identities
Fu Chengfeng realises that Qin Mu’an and Qin Muzhi are the same man. His apparent work for Prince Kaoshan conceals a more complicated political role. Fu also learns that the prince had not embraced the conspiracy in the straightforward way he initially assumed.
Why Fu was not told the whole plan
Shi Er Xiansheng had devised a countermeasure for Jinglong Zhi Ye, enabling Rong Yi and Chu Murong to regain their martial abilities. They keep their recovery secret and stage their apparent deaths to provoke the conspirators into exposing themselves.
Rong Yi explains that telling Fu beforehand could have endangered the deception. He understands the strategic point, though he is hurt by the experience of believing she had died. Together they decide to seek the remaining answers at Riyue Manor.
10 - Yun Ni, Yun Nitian and the false accusation
Character dossier - Part 10
Yun Ni, Yun Nitian and the false accusation
A family tragedy becomes a scheme to weaponise Fu Chengfeng
Key details
| Manor | Riyue Manor (日月山庄) |
|---|---|
| Manor leader | Yun Hendong (云恨东) |
| His son | Yun Nitian (云逆天) |
| His daughter | Yun Ni (云霓) |
| Family tragedy | Yun Ni dies after falling from a cliff as a child |
| Impersonation | Yun Nitian assumes his sister’s identity |
| False allegation | Fu Chengfeng wronged or abandoned Yun Ni |
| Hidden objective | Push Fu towards the Demonic Path so he might kill Yun Hendong |
The accusation
Yun Hendong believes that Fu Chengfeng became involved with his daughter Yun Ni and later abandoned her. Fu denies the allegation, but the misunderstanding fuels their conflict. Yun Nitian and Qin Muzhi exploit these grievances to create turmoil among the martial sects.
The family’s concealed history
Yun Hendong harshly rejects his son Yun Nitian for failing to meet martial expectations. After Yun Ni dies from a childhood fall, Yun Nitian impersonates her for years, manipulating the family and concealing his desire for revenge against his father.
How Fu was used
Yun Nitian intended Fu’s emotional anguish to drive him into the Demonic Path and transform him into a powerful instrument capable of killing Yun Hendong. The final disclosure clears the principal accusation against Fu and exposes the central deception.
11 - The Way of the Sword and Riyue Manor showdown
Character dossier - Part 11
The Way of the Sword and Riyue Manor showdown
Unity of Man and Sword without submission to violence
Key details
| Final opponent | Yun Hendong (云恨东) |
|---|---|
| His presumed route to power | Demonic Path (魔道) |
| True route to power | Way of the Sword (剑道) |
| Peak condition | Unity of Man and Sword (人剑合一) |
| Battle outcome | Fu defeats Yun Hendong in fewer than ten exchanges |
| Additional technique | Ge Shan Da Niu (隔山打牛) |
| Moral decision | Leaves Yun Hendong and Yun Nitian to settle their own conflict |
The two paths
Yun Hendong assumes Fu cannot become overwhelmingly powerful without entering the Demonic Path. Fu proves this false: rather than allowing his weapon and rage to dictate his actions, he achieves Unity of Man and Sword through disciplined mastery of the Way of the Sword.
The duel
Fu defeats Yun Hendong in fewer than ten exchanges. Rong Yi, herself an outstanding martial artist, is surprised to discover that his abilities have progressed so far beyond what she expected.
The restrained conclusion
Once Yun Nitian’s impersonation is exposed, Fu does not simply execute the defeated father and son. Instead he treats Yun Hendong’s injuries and weakens Yun Nitian to make their final confrontation more even. He also uses Ge Shan Da Niu to injure Qin Muzhi indirectly. He then leaves the Yun family to confront its own history.

Final romantic scene
After the conflict is resolved, Rong Yi decides to visit Fu Chengfeng’s residence, take stock of his belongings and arrange for him to make a formal proposal to her family. He responds with affectionate amusement and accepts the prospect of marriage.
Their final exchange jokes about his future role as Fuma and the absurdity of addressing Chu Changge as both a senior martial brother and father-in-law. The couple depart together; the text does not depict an actual wedding ceremony.
Character assessment
Fu Chengfeng’s greatest accomplishment is not simply his swordsmanship. His story examines whether a man with tremendous power can keep command of his own motives while enduring devastating emotional pressure.
Overall: Fu Chengfeng is a courageous, intelligent and deeply devoted swordsman whose love for Rong Yi exposes his vulnerabilities. By attaining the Way of the Sword without entering the Demonic Path, he proves that strength can coexist with restraint, affection and responsibility.
